Free Tamileelam rally by York University students:
(PHOTOS UPDATED)

[Wednesday, 2009-02-18 11:21:11]

On Tuesday February 17th 2009, a massive rally was held to speak up for the plight of Sri Lankan Tamils. Great amounts of York University students came together at Vari Hall to speak up against the genocide currently taking place in Sri Lanka. This awareness event was to bring to attention the only solution to stop the genocide occurring against the Tamils in Sri Lanka, an independent nation for the Tamils, Tamil Eelam.

The students gathered at Vari Hall, York University and did a march all the way down to Keele and Steeles; blocking the roads as they went due to the massive group of students. The students chanted slogans such as "Free Free Tamil Eelam!" and "Students united, will never be defeated!"

The march then continued back towards Vari Hall where the students once again had a gathering and had motivational speakers speak, which rang all through Vari Hall.

York's Federation of Student's vice president expressed words of concern to her fellow pupils. She had said that the issues happening in Sri Lanka against the Tamils would not be tolerated here in Canada, so why should it be accepted elsewhere?

As the event neared the end a very emotional struck student had brought out the Sri Lankan flag and lit it on fire. This student was affected greatly by the atrocities put forth by the Sri Lankan government and lost many family members in the genocide.

Students strongly believe that an independent Tamil Eelam is the only solution for the injustice that the Sri Lankan government is putting forth and it was clear that these students will not stop speaking up until they see justice prevail for their people.

UK says Lanka now safe
[Friday, 2010-07-30 08:27:57]

The United Kingdom has updated its travel advisory on Sri Lanka by removing the advise against travel to the four northern provinces of Mullaitivu, Killinochchi, Mannar and Vavuniya.

Commenting on the changes British High Commissioner, Dr Peter Hayes said, "This latest change means we no longer advise against travel to any part of Sri Lanka. Britons wishing to travel to the north should be aware that there remains a risk from mines and unexploded ordinance and that they need to obtain permission from the Sri Lankan Ministry of Defence before they travel."

A senior military official said on Monday (July 26) that Yogaratnam Yogi and Vellupillai Balakumaran, the two senior LTTE leaders were not among the detained persons identified as ex-LTTE personnel.

Brigadier Sudantha Ranasinghe, Commissioner General of Rehabilitation said that the security forces have so far identified 737 hardcore terrorists among the 11,686 LTTE cadres surrendered at the end of the war in May 2009. He said that the 737 ex-LTTE personnel were among 7,948 persons currently held by authorities and they were all men. When asked by 'The Island' whether among the detained LTTE cadres were Yogaratnam Yogi, one-time LTTE negotiator and Balakumaran of the EROS, Brig. Ranasinghe said that he did not have them.

A controversy arose when the the Minister for Rehabilitation and Law Reforms, Dew Gunasekera said that he had met the wives of Yogaratnam Yogi and Balakumar among the widows he met in Jaffna. Later, when called for clarification by reporters he said he met the wives, but he has no knowledge about both senior LTTE leaders.
