The Colombo High Court yesterday fixed for October 27 to deliver its order regarding a jury trial proposed by the defence in the murder of former TNA Jaffna District MP Nadaraja Raviraj. When the case came up before High Court Judge Manilal Waidyatilleke, the defence filed written submissions explaining their stance regarding a jury trial into the murder case. At a previous occasion, the defence attorneys appeared on behalf of the accused had requested for a special jury trial consisting of Sinhala speaking members into the murder of the former TNA MP.

However, the Counsel who appeared on behalf of the aggrieved party, raised objections against the request stating that a trial by jury could not be proceeded in this case since three charges out of five had been levelled under the Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA). At a previous occasion, the Colombo High Court allowed to proceed with the Raviraj murder trial in absentia of the three accused, Palana Sami Suresh alias Sami, Sivakanthan Vivekanandan alias Charan and Fabian Royston Tusen who were evading Court since the initiation of investigations.

The indictments were filed against six accused, Palana Sami Suresh alias Sami, Prasad Chandana Kumara alias Sampath, Gamini Seneviratne, Pradeep Chaminda alias Vajira, Sivakanthan Vivekanandan alias Charan and Fabian Royston Tusen on five counts, including committing the murder of former MP Raviraj and his security officer Lokuwella Murage Lakshman under the provisions of the Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA) and the Penal Code. The three accused who were not present in Court, were identified as ex-LTTE cadres affiliated to the Karuna faction. Wijeya Wickrema Manamperige Sanjaya Preethi Viraj was made a State witness for the Raviraj murder trial.

Raviraj was shot dead near his residence at Manning Town in Narahenpita during the period between November 9, 2006 and November 10, 2006 when he was driving his vehicle along Martha Road. The CID recovered the trishaw and the weapon alleged to have been used in the killing of the former parliamentarian. Deputy Solicitor General Rohantha Abeysooriya appeared for the Attorney General. Counsel Anuja Premaratne appeared for the accused, while Counsel K. V. Thavarasa appeared for the aggrieved party.

The Catholic Church has received the remaining parts of the report submitted by the presidential commission which probed the Easter Sunday attacks, Archbishop of Colombo Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith said today. The Criminal Investigations Department (CID) arrested two suspects, including a retired Major of the Sri Lanka Army for fraudulently obtaining money from individuals promising employment in the Russian army.

The Colombo District Court today further extended its enjoining order preventing former President Maithripala Sirisena from functioning as the chairman of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP). This order will be effective till May 9. The Colombo District Court made this order following a lawsuit filed by former President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga.

The Sri Lankan Rupee has depreciated further against the US Dollar today (Apr 17), compared to Tuesday, according to the Central Bank of Sri Lanka. Accordingly, the buying rate of the US Dollar has increased from Rs. 294.20 to Rs. 295.28, while the selling rate has also increased from Rs. 303.54 to Rs. 305.19. The Rupee has also depreciated against several foreign currencies, including Gulf currencies.

The United States (US) Government recently held preliminary talks with the Sri Lanka Navy (SLN) in Colombo regarding the planned transfer of a fourth US Coast Guard cutter to the SLN, as part of the ongoing security partnership between both the countries.

Amidst reports that some ex-military men from Sri Lanka have joined the Russian military operations against Ukraine, Sri Lankan Ambassador in Moscow Prof. Janita Liyanage said she asked for details about them from the Russian military if any.
