Sri Lanka tourist arrivals increase 16 percent in November 2016

 Sri Lanka's tourist arrivals increased by 16.0 percent in November this year compared to the same period last year exceeding 1.8 million tourists arrivals so far this year. The data released today by the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority (SLTDA) showed the month recording 167,217 tourist arrivals to the country compared to the 144,147 arrived in November 2015.

Sri Lanka's tourist arrivals increased by 16.0 percent in November this year compared to the same period last year exceeding 1.8 million tourists arrivals so far this year. The data released today by the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority (SLTDA) showed the month recording 167,217 tourist arrivals to the country compared to the 144,147 arrived in November 2015.

  

In the first eleven months of this year 1,826,041 tourists visited the island compared to the 1,592,266 visited in the corresponding period of 2015, recording an increase of 14.7 percent. Tourist arrivals from North America increased by 9.4 percent to 6,670 in November while 46,565 people visited from Western Europe registering a 16.4 percent increase in arrivals during the month. Most of the tourists came from UK (13,337), followed by Germany (11,172), and France (5,845).

Arrivals from Eastern Europe increased by 23.5 percent with the arrival of 21,249 tourists in November 2015. Reversing the declining trend earlier in the year tourist arrivals from Russia and Ukraine increased by 15.0percent and 50.3 percent respectively with the arrivals of 8,461 visitors from Russia and 4,323 from Ukraine. Tourist arrivals from Middle East increased by 51.3 percent with the arrival of 7,274 visitors during the month. Tourist arrivals from East Asia increased 12.7 percent as 31,586 visited the country while arrivals from China increased by 10.5 percent with 18,590 tourists arriving in the country in November 2016.

Arrivals from South Asia in the month increased by 12.1 percent with 46,319 tourists visiting the island. Of those arrived from South Asia, 30,148 were from India recording a 2.8 percent increase. Nearly 1.8 million tourists arrived in Sri Lanka last year contributing US$ 2.98 billion of earnings to the government revenues in 2015.

During the first eight months of 2016 Cumulative earnings from tourism increased by 16.0 percent to US$ 2.253 billion compared to US$ 1.943 billion recorded during the same period in 2015, according to Central Bank data.
