LG polls under proposed system; party leaders agree

The decision had been taken during a special party leaders meeting, that was held to discuss the delimitation committee report. The meeting was chaired by Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, the party leader said after attending the meeting yesterday at the Parliamentary complex.

He also said that they would discuss about the matter in-depth after the Prime Minister returns from Switzerland. Accordingly, during the meeting, Ministers Rauf Hakeem, Rishad Bathiudeen and JVP Leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake spoke in favour of the existing systems as there are a few shortcomings in the proposed new system. The SLFP and Joint Opposition had spoken in favour of the proposed new system. After heated arguments, the SLFP and UNP collectively agreed to hold the local government election under the proposed system.

Indian oil operations continue despite CPC strike

Lanka Indian Oil Company (LIOC) said its operations were continuing despite the strike launched by Ceylon Petroleum Corporation (CPC). LIOC said that if the CPC is unable to provide fuel to the LIOC petrol sheds it will look to obtain the oil from the Trincomalee storage facility. Workers of Sri Lanka’s state-run petroleum firm launched an indefinite strike today against the Government’s proposed deal with India to jointly operate an oil storage facility at the strategic eastern port town of Trincomalee.



SL-Indo-Japanese Pact soon, says PM

A tripartite agreement between Sri Lanka, India and Japan was on the cards to start up development projects in the island, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe said on Saturday. Premier Wickremesinghe came up with this remark at a New Year festival in Suduwella, Maradana during the weekend.

Sri Lanka has discussed its ambition to be an economic and political hub in the Indian Ocean region with Germany. The German Ambassador to Sri Lanka, Jorn Rohde told The Island yesterday that the deliberations had taken place on the sidelines of the first ever Regional German Ambassadors Conference on the Indian Ocean Region, in Colombo recently, with the participation of 40 Ambassadors and an equal number of business leaders.

Fourth round of talks between India and SL on ETCA today

The fourth round of official talks between India and Sri Lanka regarding the Economic and Technology Cooperation Agreement (ETCA) will take place today (24) in New Delhi, officials said yesterday. Secretary to the Ministry of Development Strategies and International Trade Chandani Wijewardena told Daily Mirror that this would be the fourth round of talks on ETCA between the two sides. She said the talks would go on for three days and would end on April 26. She said only basic proposals were being discussed at the moment and that nothing would be finalized. “These are talks that were in progress at the moment between the officials of the two countries,” she said.



Key suspect in Lasantha killing given diplomatic post by Gotabhaya

The chief suspect in Lasantha Wickrematunga’s assassination was given a diplomatic post by the then defence secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa but it was withdrawn soon after Mahinda Rajapaksa won the January 2010 election, fresh evidence has revealed. Rajapaksa has denied any involvement in the January 2009 assassination of Sunday Leader editor Wickrematunga and a string of other attacks against dissident journalists, but new evidence shows he nominated the main suspect as an intelligence officer at the Sri Lanka embassy in Thailand.



Germany calls for political will to implement Sri Lanka’s 2015 promises

Delay in appointing Jaffna University vice chancellor

Political interference has allegedly delayed the appointment of a new vice chancellor to the Jaffna University and the current vice chancellor has been given an extension to continue until one of three nominees is appointed. Professor Vasanthy Arasaratnam, the current vice chancellor of the Jaffna University who was due to retire last month, has been informed this week of the extension of her service.

Sri Lanka keen to boost economic ties with India: PM Ranil Wickremesinghe

Sri Lanka is looking forward to strengthening economic cooperation with India, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe has said, noting that development of the strategic eastern port town of Trincomalee will be discussed during his visit to the country next week. Wickremesinghe will arrive in New Delhi on April 25 on a five-day visit during which he will hold talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi to further expand ties in a range of areas.



2008 Haiti sex charge: Lankan contingent commander sacked, Major and four soldiers discharged

The Contingent Commander of Sri Lanka Army’s peace keeping force in Haiti was sacked for bringing disrepute to the organisation whilst a Major and four soldiers were discharged for having “consensual sexual relationships” with females. The incident, a senior Army official who spoke on grounds of anonymity said, took place in 2008 and involved the sixth Sri Lankan Peace Keeping Battalion stationed in Haiti. The official was reacting to reports in the US media last week that Sri Lanka peacekeeping troops were involved in child abuses and related activity.



Protest to stop expansion of SLNS Gotabaya

The civilians in Mullaitivu have launched a protest against the Sri Lanka Navy (SLN) expanding its presence in the Mullaitivu District by acquiring nearly 617 acres for the expansion of the Navy presence in the Mullaitivu District. The civilian protest is led by the Wanni Electoral District, Tamil National Alliance Parliamentarian, Dr. S. Sivamohan in the vicinity of the Navy base which was established in the Mullaitivu District close to the Nanthikadal lagoon in September 2013.



Japanese technical team warns of build-up methane gas in the Meethotamulla garbage dump

Shocking state in 131 schools; none pass O’Level exam

There are 131 schools in the country where not a single student who sat the last GCE Ordinary Level Examination qualified to do GCE Advanced Level.Among them Kandy, Galle and Kegalle educational zones top the list with six schools in each zone falling into this category.Kalutara and Trincomalee educational zones had five each while Piliyandala, Minuwangoda, Kurunegala and Dehiowita had four each.



SL asylum seeker let himself be tortured to support his bid to stay in UK-Judge

An asylum seeker from Sri Lanka allowed himself to be tortured with hot iron bars to support his bid to stay in the UK, judges have ruled. He claimed five scars on his back were evidence of how he was badly treated by authorities in his native Sri Lanka. But rejecting his claims, the Court of Appeal ruled that he probably consented to the torture in as part of a ruse called ‘self-infliction by proxy’ or SIBP. It added that a ‘cooperative and clandestine’ doctor might have put him under general anaesthetic while the heated iron rods were placed on him.



PRECIFAC Chairman hands over reports

Chairman of the Presidential Commission investigating Fraud Corruption Abuse of Power State Resources and Privileges (PRECIFAC) and Court of Appeal Judge Preethi Padman Surasena on Wednesday handed over reports on three state institutions, where they had concluded investigations into large scale fraud and corruption which occurred during the regime of former President Mahinda Rajapaksa.



Inflation hits 8.6% in March

The Year on Year inflation based on the National Consumer Price Index (NCPI) for the month of March 2017, has increased to 8.6% from 8.2% in February 2017, Dr. Amara Satharasinghe, Director General of Census and Statistics said. A communiqué issued by Dr. Satharasinghe said the lowest price level was reported in the month of March in 2016 and this can be considered as the main reason for the slight increase in inflation reported for March 2017. Contributions to inflation from food group and non-food groups in March 2017 were 4.9% and 3.8% respectively, whereas contributions by these two groups to inflation in March 2016 were as low as 0.2% and 2.0% respectively, reflecting the then lowest price levels in March 2016.



Clad in saffron robe, Rajiv Gandhi assassination case convict Murugan appears in Vellore court

Clad in a saffron robe, Sriharan (alias) Murugan, a life convict in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case, appeared in the judicial magistrate court - I in Vellorefor trial in a case registered against him for keeping a cellphone and a SIM card in his cell. Murugan, sporting long beard, was brought to the court around 11.30am amidst tight security. Deputy superintendent of police S Arockiam and his team escorted him to the court. After hearing, he was taken to the prison by 12.30pm.



Garbage disposal declared an essential service

President Maithripala Sirisena instructed the issuance of a special gazette notification to declare garbage disposal as an essential service, the President’s office said. Accordingly a gazette will be issued with effect from midnight today under the Public Security Act Clause NO 16 declaring garbage disposal by any authority of the Public Administration is an essential service. This covers garbage disposal, garbage separation, transportation and storage. Any person contravening the order and disturb any of the above activities will be liable for arrest, prosecution and punishable under the law.
