A delegation comprising the members of European Union has arrived in Sri Lanka Monday to review the current situation in the island nation ahead of a meeting scheduled in Brussels on re-granting GSP+ facility, the state-run radio SLBC reported. Reportedly a special discussion on granting the European Union's Generalized Scheme of Preferences, Plus known as GSP+ facility will be held in Brussels on 19th April. The EU delegation will study the present situation in Sri Lanka including the development, reconciliation and political stability. Thereafter, the delegation will present a report on its observations during the discussion in Brussels.

The European Commission in January proposed that the GSP+ should be granted to Sri Lanka once again after withdrawing it in 2010 due to the poor human rights record of the country. The European Parliament and the Council have now until May to raise potential objections before the measure becomes effective. The EU is Sri Lanka's biggest export market accounting for nearly one-third of Sri Lanka's global exports.

The Election Commission (EC) stated that several recognised political parties have had to be set aside from the relevant list due to internal crises within the said parties. According to the official website of the EC, there are 84 recognised political parties in Sri Lanka.
