The Mullivaikkal Memorial Day was marked yesterday (18) in many parts of the Northern and Eastern Provinces. A special event was organized by the Northern Provincial Council in Mullivaikkal East where a large number of war affected people, who had lost their loved ones during last phase of the separatist war, participated.

The painful Mullivaikkal memorial was marked under the patronage of Northern Province Chief Minister C.V. Wigneswaran and Rajavarothiam Sampanthan, the Leader of the Opposition and Tamil National Alliance. Wigneswaran and Sampanthan lit the oil lamp and paid floral tribute to the monument for the dead ones. Tamil parliamentarians, Provincial Council members, clergymen and the public took part in this event held in Mullivaikkal.

This year commemoration is entirely different in comparison with the past, as all three main religious leaders took part in the event and paid tribute to those who died in the war. The event was also commemorated in Batticaloa, Trincomalee and Mannar by those who had lost their loved ones in the 30-year war. Apart from that, Jaffna University students and staff also marked the Mullivaikkal Memorial Day by paying floral tribute to the war dead. The newly appointed Vice Chancellor R. Vigneswaran participated in the event and lit the oil lamp. Special prayers were held at the Kilinochchi Kandasamy Kovil by the families and relatives of missing persons. Relatives of missing persons dashed coconuts at the conclusion of the special prayers.

Meanwhile, the banned Mullivaikkal commemoration which was banned by Court on Wednesday (17) was later permitted to go head within the Chinnappar Church premises in Mullivaikkal East, where the inscribed memorial headstones of more than 500 dead persons are to be placed.
