Sampanthan reiterates stand on missing and detained persons

Tamil National Alliance and Opposition Leader R. Sampanthan reiterated his stand on firmly taking up, with the Government, the issues of involuntary disappearances and the indefinite detention of Tamil political prisoners.
Sampanthan met the family members of the involuntarily disappeared persons yesterday, the 143rd day of their demonstration, at the Kilinochchi Kanthaswamy Kovil premises.

Sampanthan met the family members of the involuntarily disappeared persons yesterday, the 143rd day of their demonstration, at the Kilinochchi Kanthaswamy Kovil premises.

  

Sampanthan was in Kilinochchi to hold a meeting to elaborate on the present political stance of the TNA and its moves to deal with the humanitarian issues in the North and East. Sampanthan met the families of the involuntarily disappeared persons after religious observances at the Kilinochchi Kanthaswamy Kovil yesterday morning. He was accompanied by the TNA Parliamentarian S. Sritharan and former Northern Provincial Council Minister of Education T. Kurukularasa. The family members of the disappeared families appealed to the TNA leader to expedite the process of finding the disappeared persons and releasing the Tamil political prisoners.

Responding to them Sampanthan said that he would not let them down and the TNA had not deviated from its firm stance on dealing with the Government over the issues of disappeared persons and the indefinite detention of the Tamil political prisoners. After his meeting with the family members of the missing, Sampanthan attended a meeting at the Cooperative Society auditorium where he addressed the Illankai Tamil Arasu Katchchi (ITAK) members and the general public on various political issues. Sampanthan, in his address, said that despite certain obstacles the atmosphere in the South was now conducive to fulfil the political aspirations of the people in the North and East.
