STF op underway in Jaffna: 38 arrested, unlicensed vehicles seized

Thirty eight persons wanted in connection with a spate of recent incidents in the Jaffna peninsula have been arrested. The Special Task Force (STF) spearheads the operation with the help of the police. A senior security official told The Island yesterday afternoon that police commandos and the police had cordoned off targeted areas in the peninsula and the operation got underway at midnight on Friday (Aug 4).

A senior security official told The Island yesterday afternoon that police commandos and the police had cordoned off targeted areas in the peninsula and the operation got underway at midnight on Friday (Aug 4).

  

According to him, the operation would continue till 8.00 am on Monday (Aug 7). Altogether 38 had been arrested until 1.00 pm on Sunday. The government has authorised the special operation following security authorities recommending specified measures to neutralise threats posed by disruptive elements. The operation is the largest coordinated action conducted in Jaffna since the change of government in January 2015. On the instructions of STF headquarters, Colombo, commandos out comprehensive security operation covering Jaffna, Chunnakam, Kopay, Manipay, Nelliady and Point Pedro police areas.

In addition to 38 suspects, commandos had taken into custody 17 motorcycles, seven tipper trucks and detected 15 traffic offences and one case of illegal transport of cattle. One person had been arrested in connection with illegal transportation of cattle, the official said. A senior Jaffna-based police officer told The Island that there could be definitely more arrests subsequent to the last update and the operation was continuing. Asked whether any former members of the LTTE had been among those arrested so far, the officer said that the suspects were still being questioned.

Mobs went on the rampage in second week of July after police fired at a vehicle that ignored signal to stop. Police action resulted in the death of 24-year-old youth identified as Dinesh. The mob caused damage to the house of one of the policemen involved in the shooting and attacked police posts in the area. Thereafter, those engaged in illegal sand mining caused injuries to Coast Guard personnel while in another incident an ex-LTTE cadre killed police sergeant assigned to protect Jaffna High Court judge. The suspect surrendered to the police subsequently. The most recent incident took place in the Kopay area where two police officers were mercilessly attacked by thugs.
