[Tuesday 2018-01-23 17:00]

The Eelam People's Revolutionary Liberation Front (EPRLF) Vanni District Parliamentarian, Sivashakthi Anandan, has alleged that except for him, fifteen Tamil National Alliance (TNA) MPs had been bribed by Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe's Ministry of National Policy and Economic Affairs to vote in favour of the 2018 Budget.
The EPRLF MP Anandan, who quit the TNA a month ago, following the decision taken by his Party hierarchy, addressing a Local Government (LG) election rally in Vavuniya on 20 January, said, each TNA MP was bribed to the tune of Rs 20 million to vote in favour of the said budget.

"I make an open challenge that if the TNA MPs have not taken the bribe, let them deny it. I have been told by several Members, presently hanging onto the TNA, that after the LG election they will quit the Party," Anandan added. Meanwhile, the TNA Jaffna District MP and the Illankai Tamil Arasu Kachchi Leader, Mavai S. Senathiraja, addressing a LG election rally in Kilinochchi on 21 January, responded to Anandan's allegation. He denied the allegation that the TNA MPs had accepted bribes to vote in favour of the Budget and said that the money had been allocated for projects that each MP could directly apply for developments in their electorates.

Senathiraja said, "There were allocations made only for the development activities in the North and the East. Those allocations will be spent through the District Secretariats. Nothing has been given as bribes to the TNA MPs and Anandan is trying to mislead the people." The Jaffna District MP S. Sritharan, addressing a meeting, challenged Anandan to prove, with evidence, whether the TNA MPs had in fact been bribed by the Prime Minister's Office. Informed sources also said that the 14 MPs had a meeting with the Prime Minister prior to the budget being presented in Parliament to discuss these allocations. The Rs 20 million is in addition to the Rs 10 million all MPs get as part of the Decentralized Budget for development in their local areas.
