Masses to be held on this Sunday

Church masses would resume from next Sunday depending on the country’s situation, the Archbishop of Colombo, Cardinal Malclom Ranjith, said today. He added that the priests of each parish are allowed to make a decision to reopen the church after looking into security concerns.


UN Rights Chief Urged to Monitor the Arrest of Sri Lanka's Jaffna University Student Union Leaders: TGTE

In a letter to UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet Jeria, the Transnational Government of Tamil Eelam's (TGTE) Prime Minister Mr. Visuvanathan Rudrakumaran has urged her to monitor the arrest of N. Diwakaran (24-years-old), Sri Lanka’s Jaffna University Student Union President and S. Badilraj (23-years-old) its Secretary on 3 May 2019. In addition he urged UN Rights Chief to request Sri Lanka not to use the current situation as a pretext to commit human rights violations against members of the Tamil community.


PM discusses security for Vesak with Chief Prelates

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe discussed security arrangements for the upcoming Vesak festival when he met the Chief Prelates (Mahanayaka theros) in Kandy today. Speaking to reporters after the meeting, the Prime Minister said that the Chief Prelates will decide on events to have during Vesak based on the security situation at the time.


Only seven intel officers in remand: Sagala

According to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), seven out of 20 intelligence officers have been remanded but not thousands as rumoured, Southern Development Minister Sagala Ratnayake said yesterday.


Newspaper to be warned over gossip column

Speaker Karu Jayasuriya today told Parliament he will raise concerns with a leading private newspaper over a gossip column it publishes on on its front page. Tamil National Alliance Parliamentarian M.A Sumanthiran raised a privilege issue in Parliament today over contents related to him which had appeared in the column. Sumanthiran said it was alleged in the gossip column that he had been warned by opposition leader Mahinda Rajapaksa of a possible attack in Batticaloa on Easter Sunday.


Banning video footage of weapons: UPFA scoffs at govt. media restriction

The Opposition today raised concerns over the government's decision to instruct media institutions not to show video footage of weapons found during search operations. UPFA MP Wimal Weerawansa said such a ban on the media was not imposed even during the 30-year long war. He said the people would be compelled to believe what was being circulated on social media after the ban on media.

Seven suicide bombers arrested

Seven trained suicide bombers from Kattankudy identified as followers of National Thawheed Jama'ath organization had been arrested in Hambantota on Monday, a senior police officer revealed. The suspects are alleged to be close associates of Saharan Hassim the brain behind the Easter Sunday terror attacks, had been brought to Hambantota by a brother of Hassim.


US official dies from injuries sustained in Sri Lanka attacks

A US official has succumbed to her injuries sustained in the bomb attacks on Easter Sunday in Sri Lanka. The US Department of Commerce said that on May 4, 2019, Chelsea Decaminada passed away as a result of injuries sustained during the April 21st terrorist attacks in Sri Lanka, where she was on assignment.


PM agrees to MR’s request to further discuss CTA

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe today agreed to a request from opposition leader Mahinda Rajapaksa to have further discussions on the proposed Counter Terrorism Act (CTA). Rajapaksa told Parliament that there are strong objections to the CTA in its current form. He urged the Prime Minister to establish a Parliament select committee to further discuss the proposals.


Former Defense Secretary and IGP issued notice to appear in apex court over failure to prevent Easter Sunday attacks

The Supreme Court has decided to take up a Fundamental Rights petition filed against the IGP and the Defense Secretary over the failure to prevent the terrorist attacks on churches and star class hotels in Colombo and Batticaloa areas, despite receiving intelligence reports prior to the attacks.


Drones will be shot

Air Force Media Spokesman Group Captain Gihan Seneviratne stated that the drones and other unmanned aerial vehicles will be prohibited in Sri Lankan air space. He further stated operating drones is a threat to national security and missions on national security.


All involved in terror attacks killed or arrested: Actg. IGP

All those who were involved in the recent terror attacks have been identified and all of them were either arrested or killed, Acting Inspector General of Police C.D. Wickremaratne said yesterday. He said that two bomb experts were among them and they have also died. “All those terrorists directly involved in the bombings are either dead or under arrest,” the Acting IGP said late Monday after a meeting with Defence Secretary Shantha Kottegoda and tri-force commanders at the Ministry of Defence.


President tells Parliament he ordered terrorists to be “destroyed”

President Maithripala Sirisena says he had instructed the security forces to “destroy” the terrorists linked to the Easter Sunday attacks. Speaking in Parliament today the President said that the security forces have successfully contained the threat posed to Sri Lanka by the terrorist network.

The security in Parliament had been further beefed up as intelligence reports had revealed that it was under terrorist threat, Speaker Karu Jayasuriya announced today. The Speaker said defence authorities had informed him that it was essential to beef up security in Parliament further.


Sri Lanka appeals to lift travel warnings

Sri Lanka has appealed to the international community to lift travel warnings issued after the Easter Sunday attacks. President Maithripala Sirisena urged the diplomatic community in Sri Lanka to lift the travel warnings since security in the country has been strengthened. The United States, China, the UK, India and Australia were among the countries which issued travel warnings on Sri Lanka.


Army Commander requests people to go back to normal life

Army Commander Lieutenant General Mahesh Senanayake has requested the general public to go back to their normal life and that the tri-forces and the police were dedicated to their safety throughout day and night. “After the terror attacks that occurred on April 21 and as of now, the Sri Lanka Army, other security forces and the police have implemented strategic plans to ensure the security,” he said at a media briefing at the Ministry of Defence today.


Government says cannot keep schools closed

The Government says it cannot keep schools closed and hopes all students will gradually return and attended classes. Education Minister Akila Viraj Kariyawasam told Parliament today that steps have been taken to strengthen security at all schools. He said that while only a few students had attended classes when some sections of schools reopened yesterday (Monday) more are expected over the next few days.


Rs.140mn cash, Rs.7bn worth of assets of terrorists identified

The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has identified more than Rs.140 million cash and other assets worth over Rs.7 billion belonging to the terrorists involved in the Easter Sunday attacks, Police Spokesman SP Ruwan Gunasekera said.


Second term starts with low attendance: Ministry

The second term of schools started with a low attendance today, the Education Ministry said. Only the secondary (6-13) classes were allowed to start following the Easter Sunday attacks on April 21. “However, the schools in town areas recorded low attendance of while schools in the rural areas recorded full attendance of teachers, children and schools staff members,” Minister Akila Viraj Kariyawasam said in a media release.


Safe house used by bombers found in Nuwara Eliya

The Police have discovered a suspected safe house in Nuwara Eliya used by the Easter Sunday suicide bombers. The safe house located at Blackpool in Nuwara Eliya had been used for training purposes as well, investigations had revealed. The Police said that detailed maps were among the items found in the two storied house.


Temporary restrictions on social media lifted

The temporary restrictions imposed on access to some social media websites has been lifted. The restrictions were imposed last night after violence broke out in Negombo. The authorities restricted access to the social media websites after videos and images related to the Negombo incident had been circulating.


Parliament to debate security situation tomorrow

The current security situation of the country will be taken up for debate tomorrow (May 06) and on Wednesday, the Speaker's Office said. This decision was taken during the party leader's meeting which was held at the parliamentary complex this afternoon. During the meeting, Speaker Karu Jayasuriya had advised party leaders to engage in a responsible debate instead of hurling insults at each other. Tomorrow's parliamentary session is set to commence at 1 pm.


Seven NTJ members arrested in Kebithigollewa

Seven individuals attached to the National Thowheed Jamath (NTJ) have been arrested in Kebithigollewa today (May 06). The suspects were arrested during a search carried out at an office belonging to the NTJ in the area. An unregistered motorcycle, 18 hard drives, 48 computer devices, and several documents concerning the NTJ group were also seized during the search.


Police fire at drone - drone flies away

The Police had reportedly fired at a drone which was hovering over the skies in the Jawatte areas in Colombo last night. Officers attached to the Narahenpita Police had observed the drone and tried to shoot it down following a tip-off. However, the drone flew towards Bambalapitiya and then along the beach areas, according to sources.


Sri Lanka expels 200 Islamic clerics after Easter attacks

Sri Lanka has expelled over 600 foreign nationals, including around 200 Islamic clerics, since the Easter suicide bombings blamed on a local jihadi group, a minister told AFP Sunday. Home Affairs Minister Vajira Abeywardena said the clerics had entered the country legally, but amid a security crackdown after the attacks were found to have overstayed their visas, for which fines were imposed and they were expelled from the island.


President says 25 to 30 active members linked to attacks at large

President Maithripala Sirisena says there are a further 25 to 30 “active members” linked to the Easter Sunday bombings still at large. Sirisena told Reuters on Saturday the security forces would “eradicate terrorism” following devastating suicide attacks on Easter Sunday and restore stability before a presidential election due by year-end.


Makandure Madush deported from Dubai

Notorious underworld drug kingpin Makandure Madush who was arrested in Dubai, was deported to Sri Lanka this morning, Police Spokesman SP Ruwan Gunasekera said. He said Makandure Madush was taken into custody by the CID at the Bandaranaike International Airport on his arrival. SP Gunasekera said that 40-year-old Samarasinghe Arachchige Madush Lakshitha, alias Makandure Madush, was later taken into the CID headquarters for further questioning.
