The Judicial Services Commission (JSC) has decided to cancel the transfer of Chief Magistrate Gihan Pilapitiya and Colombo Additional Magistrate Nishantha Peiris, which raised deep concerns among the country's legal fraternity. Earlier, the JSC transferred Colombo Chief Magistrate Gihan Pilapitiya as a District Judge in Colombo from January 1, 2016. Additional Magistrate Nishantha Peiris had been transferred as the District Judge of Matara from January 1, 2016.

However, the JSC decided to review the transfers of both Magistrates and extended their service terms by one year. Accordingly, the two Magistrates would function at the same stations until December 31, 2016. The legal fraternity in the country raised concerns over the transfer of the two Magistrates since they were hearing controversial magisterial inquiries including Wasim Thajudeen's murder case and corruption cases filed against politicians.

While refuting claims by former President Ranil Wickremesinghe that his government had allocated funds required to increase public sector salaries, President Anura Kumara Dissanayake said that no such funds had been allocated.
