A jet-powered drone, believed to be a target drone used for military training, was discovered floating in Sri Lanka’s eastern waters near Trincomalee.

The drone, marked with the name “Shikra” and manufactured by India-based Anadrone Systems Pvt Ltd, was retrieved by a local fisherman approximately 36 kilometers offshore.

The fisherman, who spotted the unusual object among fish schools, brought it ashore and informed the local police. The police then alerted the Sri Lankan Navy. The drone bore the markings “Shikra” on its wings and “Anadrone” on its tail fin, with the serial number “0032” visible.

Speaking to media, Air Force Media Spokesperson Group Captain Eranda Geeganage confirmed that the aircraft is a target drone, typically used by the Indian Air Force for training purposes. He noted that no explosives were found on the drone and assured that it posed no threat.

It is worth noting that this incident echoes a similar discovery in 2020, when another drone was found in Sri Lankan waters.

Sri Lanka has initiated a detailed investigation into the incident. A special team has been appointed to examine the drone and its trajectory. Analysts believe the drones could have drifted into Sri Lankan waters following Indian military exercises, but stated further analysis is required to confirm this hypothesis.
