BIA to close partially from Jan. next year

The Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) would be partially closed from January 2017 for urgent runway repairs. The airport will be closed for about six hours from 9.00 a.m. for a period of three months. CEO SriLankan Airlines Surein Ratwatte told the Daily News that they have been informed of this development. This will create major problem for the Airlines since 3 percent of their aircraft land and take off during this time.


My military protection totally withdrawn - MR

Former President and Kurunegala District Parliamentarian Mahinda Rajapaksa said that military protection given to him has now been totally withdrawn after systematically reducing his security over the passage of time. He was speaking to the media after visiting the Aluthgama Kande Viharaya Kshetrarama Viharaya and participating in religious observances on April 6. Asked whether he would attend the May Day rally organised by the SLFP or the Joint Opposition, Rajapaksa said it could be seen on that day.

Two deputy ministers and a state minister were appointed by President Maithripala Sirisena today at the Presidential Secretariat. UNP MP Palitha Thewarapperuma and UPFA MP Manusha Nanayakkara were appointed as Deputy Ministers while UPFA MP Lakshman Seneviratne was appointed as a State Minister. MP Nanayakkara was sworn in as Foreign Employment Deputy Minister while MP Thewarapperuma was sworn in as Internal Affairs, Wayamba Development and Cultural Affairs Deputy Minister. PM leaves for China

Army Commander has reportedly ordered to remove the Army personnel providing security to the former President Mahinda Rajapaksa. Accordingly the Army squad headed by Colonel Mahendra Fernando, who provided security to the former President during the war period as well will be removed. The particular Army squad consists of 89 soldiers and the majority are recognized to be commandos. The unit also provided security to the Pope Francis during his visit to Sri Lanka.


Sri Lanka Navy arrest four Indian fishermen, three local fishermen for illegal fishing

Sri Lanka Navy said it has assisted the Sri Lanka Coast Guard on Monday to arrest four Indian fishermen for allegedly crossing the International Maritime Boundary Line (IMBL) and fishing in Sri Lankan waters. Four Indian fishermen were apprehended along with an Indian fishing trawler while poaching in Sri Lankan waters southwest of Delft Island on 4th April 2016. The arrested fishermen along with the fishing trawler will be handed over to the officials of the Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources of Kankasanthurai for onward action, the Navy said.

The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) is to question opposition Parliamentarians Dinesh Gunawardena and Wimal Weerawansa over the controversy surrounding the recovery of high-powered explosives from Chavakachcheri last week.
