The US government officially shutdown yesterday for the first time in five years after the Senate rejected a short-term spending bill to keep the federal government running. The shutdown began at 12:01 am (local time) after a few Republicans joined Democrats in blocking the crucial measure would have provided short-term funding for the Pentagon and other federal agencies, the foreign media reported. Responding to the situation in the US, the US Embassy in Colombo said in a tweet message,

CCPI-based overall rate of inflation drops to 0.9% in May 2024

The overall rate of inflation as measured by the Colombo Consumer Price Index (CCPI) on a Year-on-Year basis has decreased to 0.9% in May 2024. According to the Department of Census and Statistics, the overall rate of inflation has decreased compared to the 1.5% recorded in April 2024. Food inflation has decreased to 0.0% in May from the 2.9% reported in April. Meanwhile, non-food inflation has increased to 1.3% in May from the 0.9% recorded in April.
