Slamming the government’s decision to co-sponsor the upcoming resolution led by the US in Geneva, Minister of Megapolis and Western Development Patali Champika Ranawaka has labelled the move a diplomatic blunder by the government. It was wrong of the government to agree to co-sponsor the upcoming Geneva resolution to gain more time to implement the 2015 resolution,¨ he said adding that opinions of other political counterparts were not sought prior to the decision being made.

Stating that he along with the JHU will continue to oppose the move, the Minister said the government should not promise to implement provisions that simply cannot be put in place. ¨For example Hybrid courts cannot be enforced,¨ he said, adding that the international counterparts too should not try to impose these provisions on Sri Lanka in a bid to make an example out of the country to the rest of the world.

Sri Lanka is now set to co-sponsor a resolution led by the US and the core group at the 34th Session of the UN Human Rights Council. According to sources the Government will submit a resolution together with the US, UK and Montenegro in the hopes that it would provide more time for implementation of UNHRC resolution 30/1 which was adopted by the Council in October 2015.
